It started off like a normal afternoon at the Chiffon house, but quickly changed the moment I stepped through the door way.
The shock of it all caused me to drop my books on the brand new carpet.
My eyes must have been as big as saucers, as I drank it all in. Holy Berry the entire house was completely redecorated. All the rooms were now a really nice orange and yellow theme. Mom had not even mentioned that she was planning on doing anything, but man it looked great!
Looked like I had an entire new house to show to Lime when she arrived.
Lime was to be coming over for dinner and we made a small deal to get her there. If she could get a ride in, I could get her back home. Apparently after a little begging and pleading, she talked her mom into dropping her off. I got a text from her the day before, confirming that I would be seeing her at 7:00 pm, and she was right on time. I heard the doorbell ring as I was getting out all of my ingredients in the kitchen. I dropped the can of goopy sauce on the counter and jetted to the door.
“You ready for dinner?”
“I sure am.”
I took her hand and lead her to the kitchen. I pulled one of the barstools from the bar area and set her up at the island, so we would talk while I cooked.
“So I was going to make you spaghetti, but I decided to make something I am a little more comfortable with.” I confided as I placed the contents of my pot on the hot stove.
“Its fine with me. You’re making it, so I am sure to love it.”
I smiled as I added just a little more salt to the pot.
We continued talking and I continued cooking. It was smelling really good, but then all of a sudden black smoke covered the pot and I knew my perfect goopy carbonara was done for. “Oh no!” I exclaimed while trying to flip off the burner and salvage what I could of our supposed romantic dinner. Sadly I salvaged nothing.
I poured the contents onto the platter I set aside and looked down at our errr “dinner”. It was just a huge pile of black mush. How embarrassing! I had just told Lime this was something I was good at cooking and now it was just a huge mess. Grumpy Pineapple took over and I let out a huge disappointed sigh. Surprisingly, Lime’s voice cut through my disappoint.
“Oh Papple, its alright. If things don’t work out the first time, you just have to try again.”
“But I don’t have any more noodles.” I replied solemnly.
“Lets go out for dinner then. That will be just as nice.”
I threw away my disgrace of a meal and then we headed to the diner just up the road. I offered to drive us, but Lime insisted we walked.
“Its gorgeous out right now. A walk with a handsome boy seems right up my alley.”
“Well then lets walk.” I replied and stuck out my arm for her to take.
“Why thank you sir.”
We had a really lovely time at dinner, I was becoming more and more fond of my Ly Ly and I knew it was just about time to tell her so. I was about to do just that, when a familiar face caught my attention out of the corner of my eye.
It was Uncle Dewy enjoying a rather large slice of cherry pie.
“Excuse me a second Lime, my uncle is here.”
I got up from the table and walked over to his. As soon as he saw me, he got up.
“Hello there Pinapple! He said as he shook my hand.
“Hey Uncle, what are you doing here all alone? Where is Aunt Persi?”
My question must have hit a nerve. Uncle Dewy looked at the carpet and then back at me. “Well your Auntie is in the hospital. She is alright, but the pregnancy was a tough one and she and the baby are stuck there for observation for a few extra days.”
“But she is alright now? Right?”
“Yes she will be fine and so will the baby. I just came from the hospital to get some dinner. Not really a fan of hospital food, you know?”
“Oh for sure. I would take pie from here over anything they could offer.”
“Say Uncle I got to run, I have my ah… ( I almost said girlfriend, but I realized, I had not officially asked her yet) friend with me.”
“Ok, you take care Pineapple.”
On the walk back, I decided I would ask Lime to be my girlfriend…officially. I stopped under a street light and grabbed her hand.
“Lime, can I ask you something?”
“Of course you can.”
“Lime I have been thinking, and I think you are just so sweet and I really really like you.”
“Aww Papple I like you too! Very much so.”
“Will you be my girlfriend Ly Ly?”
Underneath that street lamp, we shared our first kiss. It was different from Honey, but not necessarily in a bad way. Just different. It was nice and she smelled amazing! I pulled her in closer and deepened the kiss. We stayed there for several moments, until an oncoming cars headlights caused us to pull away from each other.
“I should probably be getting home soon.”
After I dropped Lime off at home, I started my way back to Twizzlerbrook. Unfortunately as I started to drive my body and my mind were having a disagreement on where they wanted to go. Soon the car was driving down the road and headed directly towards Honey’s. As I made each turn, my head was screaming… Turn Around!! Don’t Do It!
But it was too late, and soon I was idling across the street from her house. The whole house was dim except for a fire burning in the living room. It all looked so cold and desolate. A huge wave of guilt began to rush over me.
Then I saw her. My breath caught in my throat and my guilt only grew. She looked so sad. It suddenly felt wrong for me to be happy.
But I was happy, and Honey had made it perfectly clear that this was the way it had to be. It was pretty much out of my hands. I was only a boy, what could I do? Whisk her away to live in my bedroom? Her parents would be on my doorstep with in hours and from the sounds of it, Honey’s mom could do very bad things. I put the car back in drive and headed back over the hill. I tried to reassure myself as I made my way back Twizz. This was the only way…
The next morning, I was feeling a little better about my decision and thinking of Lime did make things easier, but I was really i need of my brother. Being twins, we always had this incredible bond and just hanging out and talking was usually enough to pull me or him out of any funk we found ourselves in. I went to his room, but he wasn’t there. I searched the house high and low, but still he was no where to be found. I went out the front door, when I heard a giggle from the back of the house that sounded an awful lot like Tigra. “Ah Ha!”
I followed the sounds of her voice and then a saw her arm from around the corner.
“So glad I found you guys. I really needed to…. WAH!!!”
I stopped dead in my tracks. It was Tigra alright, and… MIKA?!?
“I just had the crummiest day ever.” I moaned, as I plopped down on the couch.
“Aww Mika whats wrong?”
My brothers girlfriend was the only one sitting on the couch when I decided to storm in, but I didn’t care, my day was so bad, I would take anyone who would be willing to listen.
“This girl I like, well she says I am too good. Too straight laced. She likes bad boys…”
“Awww I’m sorry hun.”
“Blah I don’t get it. Do girls like jerks?”
“No. Most don’t.”
“Great. I must like the only one who does.” I dropped my head into my hands.
“You know what you need to do?”
“You need to get her off your mind for a little while. Just have fun!”
“Don’t really feel like fun…”
“Sure you do.” She retorted as she took my hand and pulled me from the couch. Once I was upright, she tapped my shoulder. “Your it!”
Before I even had a chance to decline, Tigra was running out the sliding glass door and giggling like mad.
Soon we were both heavily engaged in the most exciting and fun game of tag I had ever played. She was quick, but I was quicker. Soon she was it again!
She finally caught me at the corner of the house, but it was pretty inevitable, I had to stop and catch my breath. I was doubled over my legs when she ran up and tapped me on the shoulder. “You’re it again!” Once I caught my breath, I started after her, but she had not moved.
The look on her face was no longer playful, it was much more intense. She stepped closer, and I tried to back up, but the house was right in the way. I could feel my heart kick in to overdrive the moment her silky voice started directing itself right at me.
“I hope your not sad anymore, but if you are, I may know a way to change that.”
“Oh ya?” I didn’t know what else to say. Oh Ya? My head cringed, as I heard the clumsy words escape my mouth.
“You know any girl will be lucky to have you one day.”
This time I tried to think of something a little more sexy.
“Someone like you?”
We both leaned in for a kiss, and I could feel her breath on lips. We couldn’t have been but inches from each other when I heard a screech from her side that caused me to pull back and ultimately caused me to hit my head on the siding of the house. “MIKA!!”
To my horror, my brother Pineapple was standing before us staring daggers. “What in Berry’s name are you doing?! Tigra! What is wrong with you two?!”
Tigra’s mouth had dropped open and her cheeks were bright red. “I uh…We…uh…”
“Butterscotch is going to be furious! I can’t even believe what I am seeing right now!”
Before I had a chance to explain… oh who am I kidding. I had no excuse. Pineapple stormed back to the front of the house, no doubt looking for Butterscotch.
We were so dead!
